Community Gardens for Older Adults
The project would be an initiative headed by the St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre and operate in partnership with Lincoln Middle School. The 55+ Centre would engage the staff and students at Lincoln School to start the bedding plants in their greenhouse and then would transfer these plants to a rented community garden plot. We would like to hire a student for the summer to assist the older adults in the preparation and maintenance of the garden plot. A community garden party would be held during the fall harvest. We would also like to purchase a large freezer to store the haervest for year-round use during the Centre’s cooking clubs.
The produce will be incorporated into recipes (recipes that will be shared with participants) and canning classes will also preserve the produce for use during the winter months. We will also share the bounty with another program of the Centre called Memorable Mondays – this is a program that provides programming to isolated, low income seniors.
