South Osborne Intergenerational Gardening Project
Children, adolescents, young, middle, and older adults will work together in a pair of community gardens in the South Osborne area. Our organization has partnered with day cares, community clubs, and seniors residences in both the Riverview and Lord Roberts neighbourhoods. each will have an outdoor community garden plot and greenhouse. The participants will learn to plant, care for, harvest and preserve local and organically grown produce in the spring, summer, and fall. We have secured funding from the New Horizons for Seniors for this project; this application is for additional funds to enable our coordinator to help the project reach its full potential.
With additional funds we would expand the program to include film screenings and discussions about food and gardening, workshops on canning, seed saving and other garden related themes, a market where the participants will be able to sell some of their produce to the community and a community feast where they will enjoy the rest. These additional funds will also enable us to create a ‘community resource tool-kit’ which other communities can use to establish their own intergenerational gardening projects.
